Google Ads Advertising: The Complete Guide

διαφήμιση στο google ads

Google advertising (Google Ads) is the fastest way to get your business into the top position in search results, within minutes of switching on your campaign. Today Google holds around 92% of the Greek search market, which means that when Greek users look for products or services, Google is almost always their first point of contact.

With the right strategy, a budget of €15–50 a day can deliver a ROAS of 400–800% for small businesses, while the average CPC in Greece ranges from €0.30 for e-commerce to €8–25 for insurance and legal services. Who comes first depends on more than budget. It depends on 6 factors: Quality Score, Ad Rank, CPC bid, keyword relevance, landing page relevance and ad extensions.

In this detailed guide you will learn about the 7 Google Ads campaign types (Search, Display, Shopping, Video, Performance Max, Demand Gen, App), the best bidding strategies, real costs by industry in Greece, conversion tracking with GTM and the 5 most common mistakes that waste budget.

A business gets its ad to appear first on Google through Google AdWords, or, as it has since been renamed, Google Ads. There is of course always the option of promoting your website in search engines . Both options have their pros and cons. In this article we focus on Google Ads

Getting seen on Google

The most widely used advertising tool in the world right now is Google Ads. You could say it is both the simplest and the most complex tool there is.

In an earlier article we covered what Google Ads is. In short, in Google Ads we create ads that are shown for keywords we have chosen. You pay per click, so every click has a cost. There is of course a budget, which can be adjusted and capped to suit each client.

The 7 Google Ads Campaign Types and Which to Choose

Before you start advertising on Google, you need to choose the right campaign type for your goals. Here is a detailed table of all the types:

Campaign typeWhere it appearsBest forTypical CPC (Greece)
Search AdsGoogle search resultsLead generation, services, B2B€0.30–8
Display AdsGoogle network (~3M websites)Brand awareness, retargeting€0.05–0.50
Shopping AdsGoogle Shopping, top of the SERPE-commerce, e-shops with products€0.15–2
Video Ads (YouTube)YouTube, partner sitesBrand storytelling, awareness€0.02–0.30/view
Performance Max (Pmax)All Google networks (AI-driven)E-commerce, multi-channel ROAS€0.10–2
Demand GenYouTube, Discover, GmailMid-funnel, lifestyle brands€0.30–1.50
App CampaignsGoogle Search, Play, YouTube, DisplayApp installs, mobile games€0.20–3/install

CPC prices are indicative averages for the Greek market (2026) and vary considerably by industry and competition.

For example, we might have a campaign for women’s clothing with a daily budget of 15 euros, a maximum bid of 1 euro per click, and the keywords “women’s fashion” and “women’s clothing”.

Here is a successful Google Ads strategy we recommend to our clients

Google Ads Advertising: The Complete Guide - Web-Mate

To tell whether a Google Ads campaign is working or failing and needs changing, we have to set some goals from the start. For most e-shops the goal is a sale, while if the ad leads to a landing page, the goal may be sending a message through a contact form.

In general, every advertiser, professional or not, should aim for Return on Investment (ROI). That means getting the best possible results at the lowest possible cost for their website or e-shop.

Of course, to track each campaign’s goals you need to link it to the website’s Google Analytics 4 property and, depending on the type of website, set up conversions (key events) for either online purchases or form submissions.

There are two places your Google Ads can appear:

  • The first and most popular way to appear in Google search is the Search Network.
  • The second way of advertising through Google is the Display Network (“Display Advertising”), which targets a wide network of Google partner websites, covering almost 90% of the websites that appear on google.gr. These include YouTube , Gmail and apps on Android devices

Neither option is better or worse; what matters is the one that fits the business’s needs. You can advertise on just one network or on both.

Who Comes First in Google Ads?

The most important thing to know is the formula below

Ad Rank = Highest bid (CPC) × Campaign quality

Let’s take a closer look at the terms CPC and CAMPAIGN quality.

Campaign CPC and How It Is Calculated

Google Ads cost per click (CPC)

CPC is the maximum bid the advertiser is willing to pay for a click. If the highest bid (CPC) is set to €1, the most you will be charged for 1 click is €1. The amount you are actually charged for 1 click is the actual CPC, which can be lower than the highest bid (CPC) but never higher.

Quality (Quality Score)

In this section we look at 3 more terms

  • CTR: the expected ratio of clicks to impressions
  • Campaign relevance on Google
  • Landing page experience
  • Ad extensions (now called assets)
CTR is the percentage that tells you that if your ad is shown 100 times and gets 2 clicks, your CTR is 2%. The higher the CTR, the better!
With relevance, the more closely the ad matches the content of the landing page, the better your chances of being rewarded with a higher position while paying less.
If a page or e-shop is fast, well structured and has useful content related to the ad, the landing page quality will be high. The landing page experience shows how relevant, useful and easy to navigate your website is.
Extensions improve visibility and raise CTR because they give users one more reason to click. If 2 campaigns have the same highest bid (CPC) and quality, the advertiser with extensions has a better chance of a higher average position because of their greater impact.

Keyword Research & Match Types in Google Ads for Search Campaigns

Choosing the right keywords is the #1 success factor in a Search campaign. Google Ads has 3 match types:

Match typeSymbolExampleWhat it matches
Broad Matchno symbolwomen’s clothingAll variations, synonyms and related queries (wide reach, less precision)
Phrase Match“keyword”“women’s clothing”Searches that contain the phrase with the same meaning
Exact Match[keyword][women’s clothing]Only this exact phrase or very close variations

Negative Keywords: The Secret to Saving Budget

Negative keywords stop your ad from showing for irrelevant searches. Campaigns without negatives typically waste 15–40% of their budget on useless clicks. Examples of negatives for a clothing e-shop:

  • “free” if you don’t have free products
  • “second hand”, “used” if you sell new items
  • “diy”, “how to make”: irrelevant intent
  • “classifieds”, “rental”: a different type of demand

We recommend checking the Search Terms Report every week and adding 5-15 new negative keywords.

Other factors that push your ad budget up or down

  • Geographic location
  • The device the ads appear on
  • Time and day
  • Industry

The 7 Bidding Strategies in Google Ads and When to Use Each

Bidding strategyGoalWhen to use it
Manual CPCFull control over bidsNew accounts without conversion data
Maximize ClicksAs many clicks as possibleAwareness campaigns, traffic generation
Target CPA (Smart Bidding)Steady cost per conversionLead gen with a fixed CPA target
Target ROAS (Smart Bidding)Steady return on ad spendE-commerce with conversion value tracking
Maximize ConversionsAs many conversions as possibleWhen budget is the limit
Maximize Conversion ValueMaximum sales valueE-commerce with variable order values
Target Impression SharePresence in X% of searchesBrand campaigns, competitor protection

Pro tip: Don’t switch on Smart Bidding (Target CPA, Target ROAS) in the first 2-4 weeks of a campaign. The algorithm needs at least 30-50 conversions to optimise properly. Start with Manual CPC or Maximize Clicks and switch once you have enough data.

5 Google Ads Mistakes That Waste Your Budget

  1. No negative keywords list: 15-40% of the budget goes on irrelevant searches. Fix: check the Search Terms Report every week.
  2. Generic broad keywords with no match type strategy: e.g. “shoes” instead of [women’s trainers]. Fix: start with Phrase or Exact Match.
  3. No conversion tracking: you don’t know what works. Fix: GTM + GA4 + conversion actions before the campaign starts.
  4. Smart Bidding without data: you switch on Target ROAS with 5 conversions and the algorithm doesn’t have enough data. Fix: Manual CPC for the first 30-50 conversions.
  5. Irrelevant landing page: you advertise “women’s dresses” and send people to the homepage. Low Quality Score = high CPC. Fix: a specific landing page for each ad group.

Ad Extensions (Assets): How to Double Your CTR

Ad extensions (now called “assets”) add extra information to your ad, raising CTR by as much as 30-40% and improving Quality Score. The 8 main types:

ExtensionWhat it showsBest for
SitelinksExtra links to your siteAll campaigns
CalloutsShort phrases (Free Shipping)USPs / advantages
Structured SnippetsA list of categories/servicesMultiple products/services
Call ExtensionsPhone numberLocal services, B2B
Location ExtensionsAddress + mapPhysical shops
Price ExtensionsProduct/service pricesE-commerce, services with a price list
Promotion ExtensionsDiscounts & offersBlack Friday, seasonal sales
Image ExtensionsImages next to the adE-commerce, brand

Best practice: Turn on at least 4-6 extensions in every campaign. They are free, they raise CTR, and Google favours ads with rich extensions in the auction.

How Gemini AI Changed Google Ads in 2026

In 2026 Google Ads has been transformed by AI: almost all modern campaigns use Gemini or Smart Bidding with machine learning. Here are the 6 most important AI-powered features you need to know:
1. AI Max for Search (Q1 2026 Launch)

A new generation of Search campaigns that uses Gemini for automatic keyword expansion, dynamic ad assets and AI-powered headlines. It works alongside traditional Search campaigns and complements them.

2. Gemini-Powered Performance Max

Pmax now uses Gemini for asset generation (automatically creating headlines, descriptions and images), audience signal optimisation and cross-channel bidding. You now only need 5-10 high-quality assets, and the AI produces 50+ variations.

3. AI-Generated Image Assets (Imagen 3)

In Google Ads’ Asset Studio, you can create professional images for ads with Imagen 3 (Gemini’s image model). You write a prompt in Greek or English and get 4 variations in 30 seconds. Ideal for A/B testing.

4. Smart Bidding with a Gemini Brain

All Smart Bidding strategies (Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions) now run on the Gemini 3 architecture. That means better forecasting, faster optimisation (from 30 to 15 conversions for bidding maturity) and fewer ‘wasted’ clicks.

5. AI-Powered Audience Signals

In Performance Max, audience signals are no longer hard rules. They are ‘hints’ that the AI uses to find look-alike audiences with machine learning. The result: 2-3x better audience targeting accuracy.

6. Conversational Campaign Setup

A new feature: you can build a campaign by talking to Gemini in natural language. You say ‘I want a campaign for a clothing e-shop in Greece, budget €1,000/month’, and Gemini sets everything up: keywords, ad copy, audience, bidding.

WebMate’s recommendation

Despite the AI hype, human supervision is still critical. AI does 80% of the work, but strategic decisions (target audience, brand voice, budget allocation) need an expert. Our advice: use AI for execution and keep strategy in human hands.

CPC by Industry

Cost per click (CPC) in Google Ads varies dramatically by industry, because competition in the auction differs. Below are indicative CPCs and suggested monthly budgets for the Greek market:

IndustryAverage CPCSuggested budget/monthTypical ROAS

Note:

The figures above are averages from Google Ads accounts managed by WebMate and industry benchmarks (WordStream 2026). Your actual CPC may vary by ±30% depending on Quality Score, location and seasonality.

In 2026, traditional client-side conversion tracking is no longer enough. With the privacy changes (cookie deprecation, GDPR enforcement, the EU Digital Markets Act), you need a modern setup with 4 key elements:

1. Google Tag Manager Server-Side (GTM SS)

Traditional client-side GTM sends data from the browser → each platform. Server-side GTM sends data from the browser → your own server → the platforms. Advantages: 30-50% better conversion accuracy, GDPR compliance, bypassing ad blockers, lighter page load.

Since March 2024 (and more strictly in 2026), Google requires Consent Mode v2 for ALL EU traffic. Without it, you lose 30-60% of your conversion data. Implementation: a cookie consent banner that sends Google signals about user consent (granted/denied).

3. Enhanced Conversions (First-Party Data)

You send hashed (encrypted) first-party data (email, phone, address) to Google for improved matching. It improves conversion attribution by 15-25%, especially for cross-device journeys.

4. GA4 + Google Ads Linking

Universal Analytics has been retired (it stopped processing data in July 2023). GA4 is the only supported analytics platform. Linking it to Google Ads gives you cross-channel attribution, audience sharing and enhanced reporting.

Implementation Checklist 2026

  1. Set up a GA4 property + connect it to Google Ads
  2. Install GTM (client-side OR server-side)
  3. Implement Consent Mode v2 with a cookie banner (CookieYes, Iubenda, OneTrust)
  4. Enable Enhanced Conversions in Google Ads
  5. Test with GTM Preview + GA4 DebugView
  6. Set up conversion actions for purchases, leads, calls and sign-ups
  7. Monthly audit of conversion accuracy (compare GSC clicks with GA4 sessions)

Frequently asked questions

What are target ROAS and target CPA?

Ideally, in any campaign, depending on the goal we have set, we work out the right ROAS (return on ad spend) or CPA (cost per acquisition) and set it on the campaign, so we don’t spend money for no reason. For example, in a campaign with a 700% ROAS target we wouldn’t spend money unless every euro brought 7 euros back towards the goal (e.g. sales in e-commerce), while with a CPA of 7 our ads wouldn’t run unless we got a sale or lead for at most 7 euros of ad spend.

Can I set ROAS or CPA from the start of a campaign?

In Google Ads it is a bad idea to set ROAS or CPA from the start of a campaign, because the algorithm has no data and we don’t yet know how strong the ad is or how well it performs. We might set targets that are too low and spend a big budget for no reason, or too high, so our ads don’t run.

What is Quality Score and how do I improve it?

Quality Score is Google’s 1-10 rating of your campaign’s quality. It affects your CPC and Ad Rank. You improve it with: (1) relevant keywords in the ad copy, (2) a high CTR, (3) a landing page relevant to the keyword, (4) a fast-loading landing page, (5) a mobile-friendly design. A Quality Score of 7+ cuts your CPC by up to 50%.

What is Performance Max (Pmax)?

Performance Max is the newest, AI-driven Google Ads campaign type that runs automatically across all Google channels (Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Shopping). It is ideal for e-commerce with conversion tracking. You need quality assets (15+ images, 5 videos, headlines, descriptions), audience signals and at least 30 conversions a month for it to perform properly.

How long does a Google Ads campaign take to deliver results?

A Google Ads campaign brings clicks and visits from day one. Becoming profitable usually takes 2-4 weeks of optimisation (negative keywords, A/B testing ads, landing page improvements). Smart Bidding strategies need 30-50 conversions before they perform at their best.

Can I run Google ads myself?

Yes, you can start on your own with basic Search campaigns using Google’s guides. However, 60-70% of DIY campaigns waste budget because of wrong bidding, no negative keywords list and irrelevant landing pages. For budgets above €500/month, working with an agency usually delivers 2-4x better ROAS, more than covering the management fee.

What is the difference between Google Ads and SEO?

Google Ads is paid advertising with immediate results from day one, but they stop when the budget runs out. SEO is organic promotion with results in 4-8 months, but the traffic compounds over time. The ideal strategy combines both: Google Ads for immediate leads + SEO for long-term authority.

How much does Google advertising cost in Greece?

The cost of Google advertising in Greece ranges from €0.30 CPC for e-commerce to €25+ CPC for insurance/legal. The recommended monthly budget is €400–1,500 for local services, €500–5,000 for e-commerce and €2,000–10,000+ for finance/legal. The total cost depends on the industry, the competition and the geographic targeting.

So who ends up first in Google advertising?

If all of the above are equal (which is very hard: CTR, geographic location, relevance, landing page, extensions), then the advertiser with the highest bid per click will take the top position.
From all this you can see how important it is to have a high bid per click and, just as much, a good landing page and a good Google Ads campaign that gets plenty of clicks. That way we get the best result for less money.

What is AI Max for Search?

AI Max for Search is Google’s new type of Search campaign (Q1 2026) that uses Gemini AI for automatic keyword expansion, dynamic ad asset generation and AI-powered headlines. Compared with traditional Search ads, you need fewer manual settings, as the AI handles the optimisation. Ideal for businesses with limited time for campaign management, or with complex products that have many keyword variations.

Is Consent Mode v2 mandatory?

Yes, for all EU traffic. Google has required Consent Mode v2 since March 2024, and from 2026 without it you lose 30-60% of your conversion data. It is implemented through a cookie consent banner that sends Google signals (granted/denied) for each user. Free options: CookieYes free tier, Klaro, Borlabs Cookie. Premium: OneTrust, Iubenda, Cookiebot.
